Artist Statement

Moross works in gradient-based paintings that explore depth, light, and color as perceptual experience. Her compositions build light within the surface of the canvas, creating fields that shift in intensity and dimension as the viewer moves and as ambient conditions change.

The work holds emotional range without narrative or resolution. Through controlled transitions and layered color, the paintings sustain tension, softness, and density simultaneously, allowing feeling to exist without direction or hierarchy. The work asks what remains when nothing needs to be proved.

As the designer and founder of Mia Moross Jewelry, Moross brings a rigorous attention to material, proportion, and finish into her painting practice. This sensibility informs her approach to surface and restraint, where subtle shifts in tone and light carry weight. Meaning emerges through perception, depth, and duration rather than explanation.

“My work is an ongoing conversation with presence, the kind that asks nothing of you but existence. Each piece begins as an exercise in patience, in letting go of control long enough to see what honesty looks like in color. My process is about witnessing what wants to appear. What’s unresolved. What’s honest. What can rest.”

“Painting, for me, is not stillness, it’s movement without force. The canvas becomes a record of internal weather, tender, imperfect, bold, quiet, sometimes chaotic, and true. I paint what it feels like to be human. To long. To soften. To surrender. Every mark is an attempt to come home to my own truth, to let peace be something I can hold.”
